Set a snapshot policy snapshot to be persistent

The Snapshot policy feature provides snapshot orchestration at scale (1,024 snaps per storage group). The feature simplifies snapshot management for snapshots.

Prerequisites

See Roles and associated permissions to determine the user roles that can perform this task.

About this task

See Understanding Snapshot policy for an overview of the snapshot policy functionality.

The Set Persistent operation prevents the snapshot from being recycled when the retention time or maximum snapshot count is reached. The operation is useful in situations where a specific point-in-time image may be needed for longer than is typical for the respective snapshot policy. Persistence can only be set on existing snapshot policy snapshots.

A persistent snapshot is retained outside of the snapshot policy window, and is excluded for the snapshot policy snapshot count if outside of the policy window. A persistent snapshot expires when the persistent flag is removed (if outside of the policy window).

Steps

  1. Select a storage system that supports snapshot policies.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Click the storage group number on the Protection dashboard.
    • Select Data Protection > Snapshot Policies and click the storage group number on a snapshot policy card.
    • Select Data Protection > Snapshot Policies and click the compliance number or non-compliance number on a snapshot policy card.
The Snapshot Policy Storage Group list view is displayed.
  3. Select a storage group and click An icon showing the letter i to view the details panel.
  4. Select a storage group and click the number next to Snapshots to view the snapshot list view.
  5. Select a snapshot, click An icon showing three dots arranged in a vertical row, signifying a menu with more options, and select Set Persistent.
  6. Optional: Click Advanced Options to continue setting the advanced options, as described next.

    Setting Advanced options:

To force the operation even though one or more volumes may not be in the normal, expected state, select Force.

To specify that the operation is for devices in STAR mode, select Star.

CAUTION: Use extreme caution with this option. If it is used when a link is copy in progress or when a restore is in progress, an incomplete copy results, and data on the copy target is not usable.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Do one of the following:
    • Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
    • Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
